I had a great opportunity in teaching an art-infused lesson plan at Vowels Elementary school with their after-school Peak Program. Because the Thanksgiving holiday is coming up, I thought it would be appropriate to address the first Thanksgiving within my art lesson.
I taught a group of 10-15 third and fourth graders. I began the activity by introducing myself and making a point to learn everyone’s name. I think this is very important in a classroom setting because it shows I want to know their names and that I respect them.
I did an activity with them by making paper-bag vests and then decorating them with American Indian symbols. These students enjoyed the lesson by being able to express themselves with these historical symbols and symbols they came up with on their own. They enjoyed this activity so much that they asked to take extra bags home to make more vests!
